Back-to-School Dental Checklist

Back-to-school season looks a little different for everyone.

For some families, it's shopping for backpacks and school supplies. For others, it's getting a Clemson student packed up for another semester. No matter what this season looks like for your family, one thing remains the same: a healthy smile helps set the stage for a successful year.

At Bruce Family Dental, we've been caring for Pendleton families since 1977. From first-day drop-offs to move-in day, we've had the privilege of caring for students through every stage of life. Before busy schedules take over, here are a few simple ways to help every student in your family start the school year with a healthy smile.

Schedule a Dental Checkup Before the School Year Begins

A routine dental cleaning and exam is one of the easiest ways to start the semester with confidence.

Whether your child is heading to elementary school or your Clemson student is getting ready to move back to campus, scheduling a dental visit before the school year begins can help prevent unexpected dental problems later.

Regular checkups allow us to:

  • Catch cavities early

  • Remove plaque and tartar buildup

  • Check for healthy gums

  • Monitor developing teeth

  • Address small concerns before they become bigger ones

It's one less thing to worry about once the school year gets busy.

Replace Old Toothbrushes

Summer vacations, travel, and daily use can wear out toothbrushes. If it's been three to four months since you replaced yours, now is the perfect time. Fresh toothbrushes help everyone, from young children to college students, keep their smiles healthy throughout the semester.

Get Back into Healthy Habits

Summer often means later bedtimes, vacations, and relaxed routines. As school starts back, it's a great opportunity to reset healthy habits.

Encourage everyone in the family to:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss every day

  • Drink more water

  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks between meals

For college students, keeping a toothbrush, floss, and travel-sized toothpaste in a backpack or dorm room can make it easier to stay on track during busy days.

Pack Smile-Friendly Snacks

Whether you're packing elementary school lunches or stocking a college apartment, healthier snack choices can benefit your smile.

Some great options include:

  • Apples

  • Cheese

  • Yogurt

  • Carrots

  • Plenty of water

Frequent snacking and sugary drinks like sodas, sports drinks, and sweet tea can increase the risk of cavities, especially when they're sipped throughout the day.

Don't Forget About Fall Sports

From youth leagues and high school athletics to intramural and club sports, protecting your smile matters.

If you or your child participates in sports this fall, wearing a properly fitted mouthguard can help reduce the risk of chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth.

Take Care of Dental Concerns Now

Have you been putting off a chipped tooth, tooth sensitivity, or a nagging toothache?  Taking care of small concerns before classes, practices, and packed schedules begin can save you time, discomfort, and unexpected interruptions later in the semester.

A Healthy School Year Starts With a Healthy Smile

Whether you're sending your child off to kindergarten, helping a teenager prepare for another school year, or moving a Clemson student into a dorm, starting with a healthy smile can make one more part of the transition a little easier.
